Richard Horstman
In 1986 Richard Horstman first visited Ubud, where he witnessed a Balinese Hindu cremation and a temple ceremony; a vivid introduction into the mysterious culture of the Island of the Gods. He returned to Indonesia regularly, mainly to Sumatra, pursuing his passion for surfing. His fascination in Asian cultures inspired him to travel throughout South East Asia, (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines) and later to Japan, Hong Kong and China.
In the 1990’s, Richard began to explore his creative urges to paint and make sculptures. He collected used and unusual objects from which he fused together sculptures as well as installations. He has exhibited in art shows on Phillip Island and sold works in galleries in Melbourne.
Richard, (b. 1964 Melbourne, Australia) began living permanently in Bali in 2004, and currently he resides in Ubud. This began an exploration into his spirituality, the local culture and the unique energy of this renowned international artists village. He visited the many museums and art galleries in the area, regularly attending exhibition openings, local and international art and cultural programs. Richard’s passion and appreciation for art inspired him to write articles on art, first being published in the Bali Times, Dec 2008.
Richard is as a mediator between the art world and the public. He aids in the communication of art by contributing articles to the media and by contributing to art projects. He actively communicates with artists, curators, art collectives, art galleries and art spaces, along with the public. He has also given lectures on Indonesian/Balinese art and museum and artist studio tours.
Richard uses the example of the artist and their self-expression as a metaphor for life - life is art - and encourages people to connect with their core creative abilities.
